   What the Frequent Traveler Knows

Sun and Fun on the BEACHES

St. Thomas and St. John Beaches

The Beaches string along the Islands sun-drenched coasts. The crystal blue water and swaying coconut trees makes for an enjoyable lazy day in Paradise.

There are sandy coves with activities like windsurfing, snorkelling, kayaking, parasailing, and jet skiing.

A few beaches are rugged and rocky offering natural beauty.

Many beaches are secluded, private, down a dirt road adding to the Island allure.

  • All beaches on St. Thomas and St. John are open to the public. Beyond the tree line; however, is often private property and should be respected as such.
  • There are no clothing optional beaches on St. Thomas; public nudity is illegal. Many people have attempted to use Little Magen's Beach as a nude beach, but it is not recommened.
  • Removing shells from beaches on St. Thomas is illegal.
  • Don’t feed marine life or sea birds. Food not naturally in their diet, like various human foods, can create health problems for these animals.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Wear sun block, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Sun, rum and fun can spell dehydration; drink plenty of water. When you are feeling thirsty, you may already be dehydated.

Note: Snorkelling beaches with X* have Water Sport Facilities.   Best when visiting beaches to bring your own gear.

Maho Bay Beach

Maho Bay is a long pristine, white sand beach. It is close to the road so access is easy, however roadside parking is limited arrive early if you want to get a space. Seagrass beds in this shallow bay provide food for green sea turtles, which are seen often in the early morning and late afternoons. The water is relatively shallow and deepens gradually making it great for children. Maho Bay is often sparsely populated on weekdays so finding a quiet spot for yourself is easy.

Leinster Bay-Waterlemon Cay

Leinster Bay, is bordered by the Leinster Bay Trail. The area before the parking lot is great for walking and exploring. Mangrove trees line the left side of the bay. The water is very shallow for a distance and then it quickly drops off and becomes the open ocean. The shoreline is fairly pebbly, however there are a few sandy areas that can be used to enter the water for a swim. A 15 minute walk from the parking area down the trail will bring you to a narrow stretch of sand. Another 10 minutes down the trail is Waterlemon Bay, a lovely, often quiet beach. Waterlemon Cay, located a longish swim from shore, offers excellent snorkeling. Walking along the rocky coast on an unofficial trail to the tip of the bay will allow you to enter at a closer point to the cay for a shorter swim. A strong current runs along the back, right side of the cay, use caution especially with changing weather patterns. This is an excellent place to see Star Fish, rays of all types, and sea turtles. Be aware that the water is deep between the beach and cay, recommended for strong swimmers or use a vest. Bring plenty of water since there are no services. Parking is limited in small parking lot and along road. Bathrooms(outhouse) are available at parking area.
